House panel OKs bill aimed at eventual demise of BCS system
WASHINGTON – College football fans aching for a playoff system won a small victory Wednesday when a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee passed a bill aimed at bringing down the Bowl Championship Series.
“What our friends and fans need to know about the Bowl Championship Series is that it is not about choosing the champion or competition on the gridiron,” Barton said. “It is about revenue sharing for the schools that are in the BCS conferences.”
“The BCS has had 11 years to get it right, and they never will,” Barton said.
Barton acknowledged that reforming college football through Congress could be a lengthy process. If nothing else, the congressman can rely on the undying passion of college football fans, including fellow lawmaker Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb.

I’m not a fan of the BCS at all… However, is it me or is there something wrong with Congress getting involved?
3 months agoChris - In my opinion, no. Congress absolutely has an obligation to deal with the recession, staggering job loss across the country, healthcare reform and the War on Terror. That being said, college football is a billion-dollar interstate industry that involves taxpayer supported public institutions that has no transparency, oversight or reporting standards to keep the folks running the cartel working in the public’s best interest.
